“Yeah, there's a
lot of bad 'isms' floatin' around this world, but one of the worst is
commercialism. Make a buck, make a buck. Even in Brooklyn it's the same - don't
care what Christmas stands for, just make a buck, make a buck.”
– Alfred, “Miracle
on 34th Street”
"You see, Mrs. Walker, this is quite an opportunity for me.
For the past 50 years or so I've been getting more and more worried about
Christmas. Seems we're all so busy trying to beat the other fellow in making
things go faster and look shinier and cost less that Christmas and I are sort
of getting lost in the shuffle."
- Kris Kringle, "Miracle on 34th Street"
Charlie Brown: “Actually,
Lucy, my trouble is Christmas. I just don’t understand it. Instead of feeling
happy, I feel sort of let down.”...
Charlie Brown: “It’s
all wrong.” Lucy: “Look Charlie, Let’s
face it. We all know Christmas is a big commercial racket. It’s run by a big
eastern syndicate you know.”
– “A Charlie Brown Christmas”
“They're finding out now that no Christmas is coming!
They're just waking up, I know just what they'll do. Their mouths will hang
open a minute or two, then the Whos down in Whoville will all cry, "Boo
Hoo." “That's a noise... “ grinned
the Grinch, “That I simply *must* hear!” So he paused - and the Grinch put a hand to
his ear. And he *did* hear a sound rising over the snow. It started in low...
then it started to grow. But this...
this sound wasn't sad. Why... this sound sounded glad. Every Who down in Whoville,
the tall and the small, was singing, without *any* presents at all! He hadn't
stopped Christmas from coming, it *came*! Somehow or other... it came just the
same.
“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood
puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came
without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and
puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he
hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What
if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”
– Dr. Seuss, “How the Grinch
Stole Christmas”
Charlie Brown: “Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas
is all about?”
Linus: “Sure Charlie Brown. I can tell you what Christmas is
all about.”
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the
field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, an angel of the Lord
came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shown round about them. And they were
sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you
tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For unto you is born this day
in the city of David a savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a
sign unto you. Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a
manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly
hosts, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth
peace, goodwill toward men." – Luke 2:8-14
“That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”
